Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has mandated an audit of the local government accounts across the state. This directive was issued following the swearing-in of new caretaker chairmen for the state’s 23 local government areas on Wednesday.

The House of Assembly, led by factional Speaker Victor Jumbo, screened and approved the nominees sent on Tuesday, paving the way for their inauguration. Governor Fubara emphasized that the audit is a necessary measure to ensure accountability and to set a standard for the newly appointed officials.

During the swearing-in ceremony, Governor Fubara urged the caretaker chairmen to prioritize the interests of their constituents and demonstrate that their appointments were justified. He underscored that their role is a product of democratic processes and stressed the importance of transparency and integrity in their duties.

The governor also addressed the ongoing issue of tenure extension, stating that the fight against it is crucial not just for Rivers State but for the entire country. He warned that allowing tenure extensions in one state could lead to similar practices nationwide.

Governor Fubara noted that many states in Nigeria are currently managed by caretaker committees, indicating that Rivers State’s actions are not unusual. However, he assured that the tenure of the caretaker chairmen would be brief, as preparations for local government area elections are underway.

Additionally, the governor warned against the use of violence and instructed the new officials to ensure that the salaries and entitlements of the outgoing chairmen are addressed promptly. This approach aims to maintain peace and uphold democratic principles in the state’s governance.
