    35 Reps Advocate for Rotational Presidency, Single Six-Year Term

    Thirty-five members of the House of Representatives have proposed a Bill for an Act that seeks a constitutional amendment to rotate executive powers among Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. This move aims to ensure equal representation and reduce the desperation and agitation for state creation.

    Led by Rep. Ikenga Ugochinyere (PDP-Imo), the lawmakers made their call during a news conference at the National Assembly in Abuja on Monday. The bill also seeks to amend Section III of the constitution to officially recognize the division of Nigeria into six geopolitical zones.

    In addition to the rotational presidency, the bill proposes a single tenure of six years for the President and Governors to reduce government spending, wastage, and enhance governance efficiency and national stability.

    The proposal also includes the creation of two vice-presidential offices, one from the southern part of Nigeria and the other from the northern part. The first Vice President would be the succession Vice President, while the second would be a Minister in charge of the Economy, with both holding ministerial roles.

    Further, the bill advocates for financial autonomy and accountability of Local Government Councils by establishing an independent Consolidated Local Government Council Account, which would be managed solely by Local Councils. It also prescribes long-term imprisonment for any misuse of Local Government funds.

    Moreover, the bill seeks to amend relevant sections of the Electoral Act to ensure that all elections at both Federal and State levels are held on the same day. Additionally, it proposes that all elections and election-related litigation be concluded within six months before the swearing-in of the validly elected officials.

    Rep. Ugochinyere emphasized that the bill aims to build a united, stable, and prosperous nation. He expressed a commitment to transforming Nigeria into a great and modern nation through these proposed legislative changes.
