Primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions in Nigeria may soon undergo a significant overhaul of their curricula following a motion adopted by the House of Representatives on Thursday.

The motion, titled “Review of the Nigerian curriculum for primary and secondary schools in line with current global market needs and contemporary realities,” was presented by Bamidele Salam, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party from Osun State.

Salam highlighted the deficiencies in Nigeria’s traditional curriculum, particularly its emphasis on rote learning over practical skills like critical thinking and problem-solving, which are crucial in today’s labor market. He argued that while the curriculum provides foundational knowledge, it lacks the focus on practical and analytical skills that advanced economies prioritize.

“The curriculum might have a stronger focus on national subjects, potentially limiting exposure to global perspectives necessary to navigate the interconnected world,” Salam noted.

He emphasized that the current curriculum does not adequately prepare students for real-world challenges, unlike those in developed nations which often include practical training and exposure to job market demands. Additionally, he pointed out the need for better integration of technology into the learning process, which is crucial for success in the modern world.

“The traditional curriculum may not adequately equip graduates for the dynamic labor market to bridge this gap, and thus, a comprehensive review of educational programs at all levels is essential,” Salam stated.

The House resolution urged the Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with State Ministries of Education, to conduct a comprehensive review of the curriculum across all educational levels. The goal is to align the curriculum with evolving global market demands, emphasizing skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, digital literacy, and adaptability.

The lawmakers also called on the federal government to integrate practical applications, promote innovation, and enhance digital literacy within the curriculum. Furthermore, they stressed the importance of addressing resource disparities and ensuring equitable access to qualified teachers, updated learning materials, and proper infrastructure.

The House has mandated the Federal Ministry of Education to review its implementation strategy on the national policy of education. The motion has been referred to the House Committees on Basic Education and Services, as well as University Education, to ensure compliance and follow-up on the proposed changes.
