The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its dedication to diversifying the nation’s economy by focusing on the effective exploration and exploitation of solid mineral resources. This strategic move aims to stimulate rapid socio-economic growth and reduce the country’s dependence on a single economic sector.

Mr. Yunnusa Muhammed, Director of the Artisanal & Small Scale Mining Department, underscored this commitment during a visit by an 18-member delegation from the Ghana College of Defence Studies, led by Brigadier-General Fred Ntiri. Representing the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Muhammed emphasized that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration prioritizes economic diversification, particularly in response to diminishing revenues from traditional sectors.

“Nigeria has operated a monolithic economy since the late 1950s. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu deemed it necessary to diversify the economy. The solid minerals sector is now being accorded high priority to achieve rapid socio-economic development and prosperity for the benefit of Nigerians,” Muhammed stated.

Mr. Muhammed expressed optimism that the interactive forum with the Ghanaian delegation, supplemented by a presentation from Dr. Vivian Okono, Director of the Mining Environmental Compliance Department, would enhance understanding and encourage knowledge exchange.

Highlighting international best practices, Mr. Muhammed pointed out that Nigeria stands to benefit significantly from Ghana’s extensive experience in artisanal and small-scale mining, a sector where Ghana has considerable expertise.

Brigadier-General Ntiri, who led the delegation, explained that their visit aimed to gain practical insights into Nigeria’s solid minerals sector beyond the classroom environment. The theme of their study visit was “Environment, Security & Development.” He emphasized that the Ghana College of Defence Studies focuses on strategies to improve the living standards of Ghanaians.

In her presentation, Dr. Vivian Okono provided a detailed overview of the Ministry’s structure, regulatory framework, departmental functions, and the opportunities within the solid minerals sector. She also highlighted various government initiatives aimed at enhancing and regulating the sector.

The interactive session, sparked by Dr. Okono’s presentation, provided the visitors with valuable insights into the Ministry’s policies and measures aimed at advancing the solid minerals sector. Contributions from Engr. Imam Ganiyu, Director of the Mines Inspectorate Department, and other management staff enriched the discussions with their expertise.

The visit concluded with mutual recognition of the benefits of cross-border exchanges, fostering greater cooperation and knowledge sharing between Nigeria and Ghana in the solid minerals sector.
