Real Madrid has confirmed that Toni Kroos will retire from football following the conclusion of Euro 2024. The German midfielder, who has been instrumental in Real Madrid’s success since joining the club in 2014, will end his illustrious career after representing Germany in the upcoming European Championship.

Kroos, 34, started his professional journey with Bayern Munich’s youth team before moving to Real Madrid, where he formed a formidable midfield trio with Luka Modric and Casemiro. His contributions have been pivotal in securing four La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies for the Spanish giants. Additionally, Kroos played a key role in Germany’s World Cup victory in 2014.

In a statement, Real Madrid expressed their gratitude: “Real Madrid wants to express its gratitude and affection to Toni Kroos, a player who is already part of the history of Real Madrid and who is one of the great legends of our club and world football.” Club president Florentino Pérez added, “Toni Kroos is one of the great players in the history of Real Madrid and this club will always be his home.”

Kroos also shared his thoughts on Instagram, reflecting on his journey: “July 17th, 2014 – the day of my presentation at Real Madrid, the day that changed my life. My life as a footballer – but especially as a person. It was the start of a new chapter at the biggest club in the world. After 10 years, at the end of the season this chapter comes to an end.”

Kroos thanked the Real Madrid fans for their unwavering support and expressed his satisfaction with the timing of his decision to retire. He concluded with a rallying cry for the club’s pursuit of a 15th European title: “A por la 15!!! HALA MADRID Y NADA MAS!#”

Real Madrid’s La Liga season finale will be at home against Real Betis, followed by the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley on June 1. Victory in the final would secure Kroos his fifth Champions League title, equalling Cristiano Ronaldo’s record. Fellow teammates Dani Carvajal and Luka Modric have the chance to add a sixth winners’ medal to their collection with a win.

Kroos’ retirement marks the end of an era for both Real Madrid and world football, celebrating a player whose career has been defined by excellence and success.
