The Northern Democratic Front (NDF), a pro-democracy group in Northern Nigeria, has praised Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State for his leadership in driving economic prosperity through agriculture. The group highlighted Governor Bago’s initiatives as a pivotal step towards the economic renaissance of Northern Nigeria.

In a statement following an assessment at Arewa House, Kaduna, NDF National President Alhaji Hamidu Usman commended Governor Bago’s tangible commitment to revitalizing agriculture in Niger State. The Governor, known as the “Farmer Governor,” has implemented significant agricultural development policies since taking office in 2023, leading to substantial investments and progress in the sector.

    Agricultural Revolution in Niger State

Governor Bago’s administration has made agriculture a central focus, attracting over a billion dollars in agricultural business investments. The state plans to cultivate one million hectares of farmland, including a 50,000-hectare fully irrigated food production hub. To support this initiative, the government has acquired:
    – Over 500 large-capacity tractors
    – 1000 pieces of irrigation and agricultural equipment
    – 2000 power tillers for smallholder farmers
    – 2000 petrol water pumps
    – 3000 solar pumps
    – 5000 tube wells for dry season farming

Additionally, the government has distributed over 200,000 bags of fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides to farmers at subsidized prices.

    Enhancing Security and Infrastructure

Recognizing the importance of security for development, Governor Bago’s administration has equipped the Niger State Command of the Nigeria Police and other security agencies with about 100 operational vehicles. This effort aims to curb insecurity and ensure a safe environment for farming activities.

Moreover, the Governor has assured that residents farming on government lands will not be evicted, demonstrating a commitment to supporting local farmers. The administration has also embarked on various infrastructural projects to complement the agricultural revolution, setting the stage for agro-industrialization and economic development.

    Achievements and Future Goals

Governor Bago’s administration aims to deliver 100,000 metric tons of grain by June 2025. The NDF noted that these goals are realistic and the ongoing agricultural revolution in the state is self-evident. The group’s assessment confirmed significant developmental strides in the agricultural sector, achieved in less than a year.

    Historical Context and Economic Impact

Highlighting the historical importance of agriculture, the NDF recalled that agricultural exports accounted for about 90% of Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings in 1960. In the first quarter of 2023, cocoa seed, sesame, and cashew seed alone generated N297 billion. The success of agricultural exports, as seen in countries like Malaysia, underscores the potential economic benefits for Nigeria.

    Conclusion

The NDF lauded Governor Bago for his visionary leadership in agriculture, which aligns with the economic roadmap of Nigeria’s founding fathers. The group’s statement emphasized the enormous benefits and potential of the agricultural sector, advocating for the emulation of Governor Bago’s achievements across the region and the country.
