Alhaji Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, has restated the unwavering commitment of the Federal Government to uphold the principle of press freedom while urging media professionals to practice responsible journalism.

During a meeting with senior executives of the Centre for Media and Society (CEMESO) in Abuja, Idris emphasized the importance of responsible reporting, stating that press freedom should be accompanied by a sense of responsibility to report credibly, honestly, and transparently.

Highlighting the crucial role of press freedom in democracy, Idris stressed that the government fully acknowledges the significance of a vibrant media landscape in fostering democratic values. He cited President Bola Tinubu as an example of a product of press freedom, affirming that the government has no intention of stifling press freedom.

Idris cautioned against intentionally disseminating misinformation and promoting inflammatory reports that could incite discord and anarchy within society under the guise of press freedom, noting that such actions are unacceptable.

Furthermore, he warned that media professionals risk losing public trust, confidence, and credibility by engaging in disinformation, emphasizing the need for responsible journalism.

In response to a request from the Executive Director of CEMESO, Dr Akin Akingbulu, regarding the review of sections of the constitution perceived to hinder press freedom, Idris assured collaboration with the National Assembly to address the issue. He also pledged to work with stakeholders to ensure compliance with the Freedom of Information Act while discouraging its willful abuse.

Akingbulu commended the minister for positively changing the narratives of the ministry since assuming office, expressing optimism for a new era of positive developments in the Nigerian information sector.
