Evaluating Yahaya Bello’s Governance: Prioritizing Politics over Development?

Zainab Suleiman Okino reflects on the legacy of Alhaji Yahaya Bello’s administration in Kogi State, questioning whether politics overshadowed good governance during his tenure.

Critics have raised concerns about Bello’s focus on political ambitions, both at the national and state levels, which seemingly diverted attention from his administration’s achievements. Despite substantial investments and initiatives, such as the establishment of new universities and infrastructure projects, critics argue that these accomplishments were not adequately highlighted.

Okino acknowledges the complexities of evaluating Bello’s legacy due to prevailing sentiments and his influential political stature within the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, recent observations during a tour led by the Commissioner of Information revealed tangible developments, including the transformation of infrastructure like the Muhammadu Buhari Centre and Okene Specialist Hospital.

The establishment of the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH) in Osara stands out among Bello’s initiatives, offering programs tailored to Kogi’s needs, such as Petroleum and Gas Engineering and Marine Engineering.

Despite these advancements, questions persist regarding Bello’s political engagements and their impact on governance. Okino underscores the importance of separating political aspirations from the delivery of good governance, emphasizing that the two are not mutually exclusive.

As Kogi State navigates its future under Governor Usman Ahmed Ododo, Okino urges continuity in building upon the foundation laid by Bello’s administration. She emphasizes the importance of good governance in realizing the state’s potential and ensuring sustainable development.

In conclusion, Okino highlights the need for a balanced approach to politics and governance, emphasizing the significance of tangible achievements over political maneuvers. She calls for a critical appraisal of Bello’s legacy, hoping that future leaders prioritize the welfare and development of the people above political interests.
