In line with the commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and meet the targets outlined in the Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Accord, the NNPC Ltd/Total Energies Joint Venture has accomplished a major milestone by eliminating routine gas flaring across all its assets.

This was contained in a statement issued by Olufemi O. Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer NNPC Ltd on Thursday in Abuja.

According to the statement, the announcement was made during a recent inspection tour of OML 100 in the South-eastern Niger Delta, off Port Harcourt, by a joint team from NNPC Ltd and Total Energies. The purpose of the visit was to assess the progress of the OML Flare Reduction Project, which was launched in December 2023.

Previously, the NNPC Ltd/Total Energies Joint Venture had already achieved zero routine flaring in OML 99 (2006), OML 102 (2014), and OML 58 (2016). The successful elimination of routine flaring in OML 100, previously the only lease with ongoing flaring, marks a significant accomplishment. This milestone has resulted in a reduction of approximately 341KtCOâ‚‚e/yr in greenhouse gas emissions, as the last routine flare volume of about 12MMscf/d of gas has been eradicated.

This achievement is a result of the NNPC Ltd’s concerted efforts to implement a program aimed at achieving zero routine flare across all its assets by 2030. It demonstrates the company’s commitment to sustainability and its prioritization of reducing its carbon footprint, aligning with the ‘first R’ of its 5R Strategy: Reduce, Replace, Renew, Re-plant, Repurpose.

The NNPC Ltd’s Upstream Directorate is actively working on similar initiatives across all its other assets to ensure that zero routine flaring is achieved by 2030, or even earlier.

The successful elimination of gas flaring by NNPC Ltd/Total Energies Joint Venture is a significant step towards combatting climate change and contributing to a greener future.
