Senator John Owan Enoh, the Minister of Sports Development, has strongly criticized the online attacks targeting Super Eagles and Fulham midfielder, Alex Iwobi, following Nigeria’s 1-2 loss in the final of the 2023 AFCON held in Ivory Coast.

Enoh, who returned with the Super Eagles from Abidjan, personally met with Iwobi and assured him of the Ministry’s commitment to protecting Nigerian athletes who represent the nation on the global stage.

In a statement issued by Enoh’s special adviser on media, Diana Mary Nsan, the minister expressed concern over the prevalence of bullying on social media, particularly directed towards athletes following disappointing performances. He emphasized the Ministry’s stance against such behavior, underscoring the need to safeguard the well-being of sportsmen and women.

Enoh, acknowledging the negative remarks aimed at Iwobi on social media, revealed that he had personally refrained from engaging in social media following the final match. He encouraged Iwobi, affirming that he had performed admirably for his country and should be proud of his efforts.

The minister commended Iwobi for his dedication and reminded him of the significance of his contribution to the team’s achievement, highlighting Nigeria’s silver medal win at AFCON 2023, a feat not achieved since 2000. He assured Iwobi that the majority of the nation stands behind him and urged him to remain resilient in the face of criticism.
