Rivers State Crisis: Nigerians Anticipate More from Wike as the Second Most Prominent Politician – Laolu Akande

In a recent interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, former presidential aide Laolu Akande expressed disappointment over the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State. Akande noted that Nigerians had high expectations from Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), whom he considered the second most prominent politician in the country.

While acknowledging Wike’s reputation as a dynamic and effective leader, often referred to as “Mr. Project,” Akande emphasized the importance of managing political responsibilities with grace and measured expectations. He voiced his disappointment, particularly with Wike’s role in the recent events in Rivers State.

Akande placed the responsibility for managing the political situation on Wike, describing him as the senior partner in the matter. He criticized the FCT Minister for not effectively handling the situation with his anointed governor, referring to the recent defection of 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly loyal to Wike to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the demolition of the Assembly Complex.

Despite attempts by President Bola Tinubu to mediate and broker peace between Wike and his godson, Governor Fubara, the political crisis in Rivers State has intensified. Akande urged Wike to carry himself in a manner befitting his influential position in Nigerian politics and to navigate the challenges with more measured management.

The unfolding events in Rivers State have raised concerns about the impact of the political strife on governance and democracy in the region.
