Former Manchester United goalkeeper, Ben Foster, has voiced his opinion that Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk stands as the greatest center-back to have ever graced the game.

Speaking on the Fozcast, Foster shared his thoughts, stating, “I have a name that I believe deserves a place in the top 10 [defenders list]. Some might emphasize longevity, but in the grand history of center-backs, this individual elevated the game to new heights. I genuinely believe it’s Virgil van Dijk.”

Foster continued, “For three consecutive years, he dominated as the world’s best center-back. Although he faced a significant injury, he’s still working his way back to his former self. When Virgil van Dijk was at his peak, he was, in my view, the finest defender to have ever graced the sport.”

Foster concluded by highlighting the short memories of some, acknowledging that Van Dijk’s cruciate ligament injury may have slightly affected his pace. Virgil van Dijk made the transition to Liverpool from Southampton in 2018
