In a dazzling revelation made at the prestigious P20 Summit in New Delhi, India, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has ignited global enthusiasm by unearthing Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to conquering the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

With a fervor that electrified the summit’s audience, the Speaker declared that Nigeria’s dedication to the SDGs transcends mere rhetoric, breathing life into the noble pursuit of global development. He recounted a transformative journey that commenced in 2015, as Nigeria embarked on a comprehensive strategy to transition from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to the SDGs. This plan aimed to leverage the progress achieved from 2016 to 2020, scale up implementation from 2021 to 2025, and accelerate progress from 2026 to 2030.

In an astounding press statement by Musa Abdullahi Krishi, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, the Speaker highlighted Nigeria’s bold move in January 2016, establishing the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs (OSSAP-SDGs). This innovative institution has played a pivotal role in institutionalizing the SDGs across Nigeria through the implementation of strategic initiatives and programs.

The Speaker’s revelation did not stop there. Nigeria’s commitment was further illuminated by independent country-led evaluations of SDG-3 (quality health and well-being for all) and SDG-4 (inclusive education and lifelong learning for all). A sensational revelation was the sponsorship of the United Nations’ Resolution A/77/L.64, focusing on enhancing voluntary national reviews through country-led evaluations—a feat backed by influential nations such as Russia, China, Jamaica, Senegal, and South Africa. This amplified Nigeria’s international influence and unwavering commitment to monitoring global SDGs progress.

Further magnifying Nigeria’s dedication, the Speaker unveiled the country’s central role in launching the Integrated National Financing Framework (INFF). This groundbreaking sustainable financing plan signifies Nigeria’s unflinching resolve to achieve the SDGs. Nigeria’s innovation extends to the Integrated Sustainable Development Goals (iSDGs) Simulation Model, a bespoke analytical framework and policy simulation tool enabling efficient alignment of national development strategies with the SDGs.

Nigeria’s commitment to transparency and evidence-based reporting was unveiled through its active participation in Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs). The Speaker emphasized the meticulous crafting of policy frameworks and regulatory mechanisms to embed the SDGs within national policies and programs. The revelation of analogous SDG offices in state governments across Nigeria, nested within their Ministries of Budget and Economic Planning, is a testament to the country’s unyielding pursuit of the SDGs.

Even in the face of adversity, Nigeria’s resolve remains unshaken. The Speaker acknowledged the pandemic’s impact on healthcare, education, gender equality, and climate action but underscored the nation’s unwavering inclusivity, ensuring no Nigerian is left behind. Nigeria’s legislature, through the establishment of SDG committees, actively integrates the SDGs into legislative processes and actions.

To champion the cause of education, Nigeria passed the Out-of-School Children Commission Act 2023, addressing educational disparities and promoting access to quality education. The Speaker also lauded the creation of committees for people with disabilities, women affairs, and youth development in the House of Representatives, showcasing Nigeria’s dedication to vulnerable and marginalized groups.

In a groundbreaking move, the National Assembly enacted the Climate Change Act, positioning Nigeria as the first parliament in Africa to take such a measure in mitigating climate change’s adverse effects.

Nigeria’s commitment to the SDGs is resounding, with inclusivity and equitable development at its core. Through unwavering dedication and collaboration, Nigeria aims to herald a sustainable and prosperous future for all Nigerians by 2030 and beyond.
