NFF Official Claims Sanusi Excluded Most of Super Falcons from Presidential Reception

    Published on

Amidst a wave of public criticism directed at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for hosting just three members of the 23-player Super Falcons team at a reception by the wife of the President, Remi Tinubu, a high-ranking NFF official disclosed to The PUNCH that General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi was behind the decision. According to the official, Sanusi informed players and officials that the Presidency had requested a downsized list of attendees.

The Super Falcons had a commendable run at the ongoing Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, ultimately exiting the tournament after a spirited effort against England in the round of 16.

Despite their departure from the World Cup, President Bola Tinubu and his wife lauded the team’s performance, with the First Lady committing to hosting the team upon their return to Nigeria. However, only three team members were received at the event, sparking outcry from fans who had witnessed the team’s valiant display on the global stage.

Reportedly, Mrs. Tinubu presented each player with $10,000, while officials received $2,500 each. A photograph shared on the NFF’s Twitter account captured the President’s wife alongside other dignitaries and only three Falcons players.

Critics on social media expressed their disappointment, questioning the choice of attendees and suggesting that the team’s full squad should have been present.

It has now emerged that an initial list featuring 21 names, comprising players, backroom staff, sports ministry representatives, and NFF officials, was drastically reduced to just six players and officials for the reception. The reduction was allegedly ordered by NFF’s General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi.

An anonymous senior NFF official, speaking to The PUNCH, claimed that Sanusi’s decision was driven by concerns that certain players might divulge sensitive information if present at the reception.

The controversy has intensified discussions about the management of the Super Falcons and the NFF’s decision-making processes, with fans and observers voicing their discontent over the handling of the event and the perceived exclusion of key team members.
