A young Nigerian doctor, identified as Vwaere, tragically lost her life in an elevator accident at General Hospital Odan, located in Lagos Island. With just under two weeks left to complete her housemanship, the incident has shocked and saddened her friends, colleagues, and the medical community.
According to social media posts shared by her friends, the incident occurred when Vwaere was inside the elevator, heading down to collect something from a dispatch rider outside. Regrettably, the elevator malfunctioned and fell from the 10th floor to the ground floor, resulting in the fatal accident.
Reports suggest that it took the hospital an hour to evacuate Vwaere’s body and transport her to the emergency department, but unfortunately, she couldn’t survive her injuries.
In the aftermath of the incident, a staff member who witnessed the tragedy revealed that the elevator had been a cause for concern among the hospital’s employees for some time. Complaints about its issues had been raised, but no effective action was taken to address the problem. The staff member expressed frustration, saying, “We’ve complained for a long time about this elevator. We’ve manoeuvred, managed, and prayed each time we had to use it. Empty promises will be made to fix it… till it killed one of us.”
As of now, neither the hospital management nor the family of the deceased has issued any official statement regarding the devastating loss. The medical community and the public are awaiting further updates and hoping for appropriate measures to prevent such accidents from happening again in the future.
