Algerian football star Riyad Mahrez has sealed a high-profile move to the Saudi Pro League, joining Al Ahli in a £30 million ($38.7m) deal from Manchester City. The announcement of the transfer was made on Friday, and Mahrez expressed his eagerness to embark on this new chapter in his career in Saudi Arabia. Al Ahli secured the signing with a guaranteed payment of £26m plus £4m in add-ons, and Manchester City, the Premier League champions, approved the deal, allowing Mahrez to pursue his ambitions in the Saudi Pro League.

During his time with Manchester City, Riyad Mahrez played a crucial role in the club’s success, contributing significantly to winning four Premier League titles, including a historic Treble in the previous season. Since his move from Leicester City to Manchester City in 2018, Mahrez has made 236 appearances, leaving an indelible mark on the team’s achievements.

In a statement to City’s website, Mahrez expressed his deep gratitude and fondness for his tenure with Manchester City, saying, “To play for Manchester City has been an honor and privilege. I came to City to win trophies and enjoy my football, and I achieved all that and so much more.” He also acknowledged the invaluable support of the fans, his teammates, and the club’s manager, recognizing their significant contributions to his success.

In a separate development, Al Ahli announced the appointment of Matthias Jaissle as their new manager, inking a three-year deal. The decision came after FC Salzburg released the German coach following his expressed desire to join the Saudi club. Jaissle, a former Hoffenheim player, is enthusiastic about leading Al Ahli, and this paved the way for his departure from his previous duties at Salzburg.

Salzburg’s managing director, Stephen Rider, explained the reasoning behind their action, emphasizing that a coach intensely contemplating a club change just two days before an important season opener should not be part of that critical moment. The club’s priority is to start the new season with utmost focus and energy, requiring unwavering commitment from all involved parties.

Al Ahli has been actively bolstering their squad for the upcoming season, making ambitious signings beyond Riyad Mahrez. They have also secured the services of striker Roberto Firmino from Liverpool and goalkeeper Édouard Mendy from Chelsea. These acquisitions highlight Al Ahli’s determination to compete at the highest level and achieve their objectives in the Saudi Pro League.

    • Matthias Jaissle has been appointed as Al Ahli’s new manager after being released by FC Salzburg due to his desire to join the Saudi club.
