In a recent ruling, a Federal High Court in Abuja has instructed the disclosure of financial records concerning the approximately $5 billion Abacha loot that was recovered during the administrations of former Nigerian presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Goodluck Jonathan, and Muhammadu Buhari.

The court has mandated that the government, under President Bola Tinubu, reveals the precise amount of funds embezzled by General Sani Abacha from Nigeria, the total sum of recovered Abacha loot, and all related agreements entered into by the governments of Obasanjo, Yar’Adua, Jonathan, and Buhari.

This judgment was issued last week by Justice James Kolawole Omotosho, following a Freedom of Information lawsuit filed by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP).

Justice Omotosho stated, “Upon careful consideration, SERAP’s application is well-founded, and the Ministry of Finance, representing the Federal Government, is hereby instructed to provide SERAP with comprehensive expenditure details regarding the $5 billion Abacha loot within 7 days of this judgment.”
